Prior to reaching a state of notoriety, Ben was a movie stuntman. However, police brutality allegedly pushed him to a life of crime. He was fatally shot during an encounter with police officers in Manila on March 13, 1981. Although law enforcers considered him as a hardened criminal, people from the poor communities of Malabon looked up to him as a beneficent Robin Hood figure. The widespread grief apparently inspired a poem that is inscribed on the marker of his grave at the Malabon Cemetery. A transcript of the poem and its English translation follows.

Ikaw ba'y masama o isang dakila

Bakit maraming nag magandang loob

Nag-abuloy sayo ng katakot-takot

Ang alaala mo ay magiging aral

Sa taga Malabon at karatig bayan

Ang dalamhati nila kung nasaan ka man

Sana ay kamtin mo ang kapayapaan.

Are you an evil or a great one?

Why are so many people impressed by you?

Elderly, young women and children

Don't believe in your death

Why can't it be heard from people's mouths?

The words "I hate Ben Garcia."

Why Ben Tumbling became an idol

And yet the news says he is someone inveterate

Why are there so many sad people?

That your life abruptly ended

Why are there so many good-hearted people

Who donated a lot to [your bereaved family]

Your memory will be a lesson

To the people of Malabon and neighboring towns

Their grief wherever you are

I hope you find peace.

In 1985, Amazaldy Film Production released Ben Tumbling: A People's Journal Story starring Lito Lapid in the title role. The thoughts of stifling air pushed me to ponder on the things that can help me beat the heat. One of those things is ice cream. I am not referring to the branded sort we buy in groceries by the tub. What I mean is "dirty ice cream," or sorbetes, the kind being sold by ambulant vendors who push a cart and ring a handheld bell. The thoughts of sorbetes remind me of a film and a song, both titled Mamang Sorbetero.

Mamang Sorbetero (Tagalog: Mr. Ice Cream Vendor) is a 1979 Philippine romantic comedy-action film directed by Augusto Buenaventura from a screenplay he co-wrote with Diego Cagahastian. As J.E. Productions' entry to the Metro Manila Festival in that year, Mamang Sorbetero has a stellar cast led by producer Joseph Estrada, Celeste Legaspi, Rod Navarro, Dencio Padilla, Subas Herrero, Vic Sotto and Herbert Bautista. Other members of the cast include Quiel Segovia, Veronica Palileo, Sammy Padilla and Ford Elorde.

The film opens with Kanor (portrayed by Joseph Estrada) alighting from a bus in a transport terminal. Being a newcomer to the urban jungle, a gang of children chose Kanor as a target. Some gang members acted as beggars who approached Kanor with the pretext of asking for alms. While being distracted Kanor lost focus of his wallet, which was snatched by the gang members. (A young Herbert Bautista plays the role of Kupal, one of the juvenile lookouts).

At the same terminal, Badong (portrayed by Dencio Padilla) is a bystander who also happens to be a sorbetero. He witnessed the events from a distance and accosted one of the thieves to help Kanor recover the wallet. The chance encounter provided Kanor the opportunity to ask Badong regarding the whereabouts of his Tiyo Miguel (portrayed by Francisco Cruz). The film's universe is so conveniently small; Tiyo Miguel is Badong's housemate. However, the old man turned out to be already sick for a few days and is confined in a hospital.

Back in the province, Tiyo Miguel had promised Kanor to help him find a job in the city. Due to his condition and what he considers as unhealthy elements in the city, Tiyo Miguel stated that he intends to go back to the province for good. With the promised job out of the question, Badong promptly suggested for Kanor to become a sorbetero like him. The film then cuts to the opening credits with vignettes of the sorbetero selling the frozen delight to customers seeking refreshment.

A series of events leads to the hero's meeting with his love interest, Cielo Monzon (portrayed by singer Cielito Legaspi). Her father, the debt-ridden Federico (portrayed by Subas Herrero), intends to marry her off to a rich man as a way to ease his financial woes. The rich man is Ariston Dela Serna (portrayed by Vic Sotto). Cielo is not interested in a mama's boy for a life partner. Even on mundane decisions, Ariston is very dependent on his mother.

At this point in the movie, Cielo is steadily dating Tony Imperial (portrayed by Rod Navarro). Unlike Ariston, Tony has the image of a real man who has a "backbone." It was a ruse; he turned out to be a car salesman who pretends to be rich, hoping to snag wealthy women. Tony's cover was eventually unraveled when Jimmy Imperial (portrayed by Dave Brodett), a genuine member of the Imperial clan from Negros, confronted him in a golf-club cafeteria. Cielo witnessed the confrontation and promptly decided to stop seeing Tony.

Tony is desperate to marry Cielo for her money because a criminal syndicate pressures him to pay off his debts. He hatched a plan to kidnap her as her car was approaching the gate of their house. Kanor happened to take a break from selling ice cream and rested on the lawn. He then stopped the kidnapping attempt. After introducing himself as Nick, our sorbetero undoubtedly became a hero in the eyes of Cielo. Moreover, Nick appears to have amassed more pogi points by taking the delinquent children under his fold and guiding them toward a normal life away from crime. Swept off her feet, Cielo consistently pursued Nick and their roller-coaster love story started.

TROPES AND THEMES

Although not meant to be an arthouse movie, Mamang Sorbetero deals with some real-life topics. For instance, the change in the nickname as someone goes from the province in the city. Our hero is named Kanor in the province; he is Nick in the city.

Nick seems to harbor feelings of inferiority complex because of his social status. Meanwhile, Cielo envies his freedom. During a date with Nick in the zoo, she compared herself to a caged animal - bound by rules and norms imposed by society.

There is also self-poking humor. There is a scene in which policemen questioned Kanor for "parking" his cart in front of a public building. Kanor told the policemen that he knows the mayor and will report them to the city official. Joseph Estrada was mayor of San Juan at that time.

In one scene, Badong says that he has only 75 pesos in his possession. According to the Philippine Inflation Calculator, the goods that can be bought in 1979 for 75 pesos would roughly cost 2,039 pesos and 62 centavos at the end of 2022.

MUSIC:

The theme song is one of Celeste Legaspi's hit songs. Its melody is derived from composer Jose Mari Chan's "Mr. Songwriter," while the Tagalog lyrics was written by Gryk Ortaleza. Seemingly in accompaniment with the lyrics of the song, the opening credits feature ice cream vendors ringing their bells to alert the customers who try to beat the hot weather.

(Fun Fact: Two famous Joses in Philippine entertainment, Joseph Estrada and Jose Mari Chan, share a connection with each other in this film. Estrada's birth name is Jose Marcelo Ejercito Sr., while Chan's birth name is Jose Mari Lim Chan).

LYRICS

Mamang sorbetero, anong ngalan mo
Tinda mong ice cream gustong-gusto ko
Init ng buhay pinapawi mo
Sama ng loob nalilimutan ko

Mamang sorbetero tayo'y sumayaw
Kalembang mong hawak muling ikaway
Batang munti sayo'y naghihintay
Bigyang ligaya ngayong tag-araw

Masdan ang ulap sa himpapawid
Korteng sorbetes sa pisngi ng langit
Mata ng dalaga'y nananaginip
Mayro'ng sikretong nasasaisip

Mamang sorbetero tayo'y sumayaw
Kalembang mong hawak muling ikaway
Batang munti sayo'y naghihintay
Bigyang ligaya ngayong tag-araw

Mainit na labi nagbabagang mata
Sunog na pag-ibig parang-awa mo na

Mamang sorbetero o nasaan ka
Init ng buhay pawiin mo na
Mamang sorbetero tayo'y sumayaw
Kalembang mong hawak muling ikaway
Batang munti sayo'y naghihintay
Bigyang ligaya ngayong tag-araw

La la la la

Mamang sorbetero tayo'y sumayaw
Kalembang mong hawak muling ikaway
Batang munti sayo'y naghihintay
Bigyang ligaya ngayong tag-araw

La la la la

ENGLISH TRANSLATION

Mr. Ice Cream Vendor, what is your name?

The ice cream you sell, I love it very much

You quench the heat of life
Making me forget my ill feelings

Mr. Ice Cream Vendor, let's dance
The bell you are holding, sway it again

A little child is waiting for you
Give us happiness this summer

Look at the clouds in the sky
Shaped like ice cream on the cheek of heaven
The girl's eyes are dreaming
There is a secret in mind

Mr. Ice Cream Vendor, let's dance
The bell you are holding, sway it again

A little child is waiting for you

Give us happiness this summer

Hot lips, burning eyes
Burning love, take pity on us

Mr. Ice Cream Vendor, where are you?
Put out that heat of life

Mr. Ice Cream Vendor, let's dance
The bell you are holding, sway it again

A little child is waiting for you

Give us happiness this summer

La la la la

Mr. Ice Cream Vendor, let's dance
The bell you are holding, sway it again

A little child is waiting for you

Give us happiness this summer

La la la la
Kalabasa K. Played constantly by the leading radio stations of that era, the song was a hit among the regular attendees of the occasional Saturday night disco parties in many barangays all over the country. There is little information on the Internet about this dance hit. Fortunately a YouTube channel called RAGElite offers some details. According to the channel, A Dream (Dumio) was an underground hit in Melbourne, Australia circa 1986-1987. In those years, Grace was possibly the only Australian representative of the Italo-disco movement.

A Dream (Dumio) was so well-liked all over the Philippines that the comedic trio of Tito, Vic and Joey parodied the Robert Grace hit in Shoot That Ball, a movie produced by Regal Films in 1987. During those times, it seemed to be common practice in the local movie industry to imitate or cover chart-topping tracks from abroad with exaggerated humor. Intellectual property law was less strictly enforced than nowadays.

Going back to the scene, the parody of A Dream (Dumio) can be viewed from the 46:00 to 50:00 minute window of the video below. In that scene, Pidiong, Manong and Tinggoy (respectively portrayed by Tito, Vic and Joey are students at the Agricultural School of the Orient (ASO). ASO is the rival institution of the Philippine University of Sciences & Arts (PUSA). This rivalry and other details, will be covered in future posts on this blog.

Mrs. Mercedes Kasusuan (portrayed by Florence Carvajal) is their teacher in Animal Husbandry. Juan Ponce Enrile is the name of the man. Currently serving as the Presidential Legal Counsel, Enrile is the oldest incumbent public official in the Philippines. He is also entitled to a 100,000 peso cash gift from the government. (An infinitesimal sum compared with his net worth). Also known by the nickname Johnny, he has become a staple in pop culture in the past few years because of the memes that poke fun on his longevity.

Many people are in awe with his ability to stay alive that long while supposedly possessing mental clarity. (I am one of those who wish to achieve that feat in the decades to come.) My interest in Enrile's longevity started in 2012, when ABS-CBN Publishing released his memoir. Enrile was already 88 years old then, so many observers thought that the book was meant to be some sort of a "swan song." The following passage is even found in the back cover: "I have been judged and condemned many times. But I fear only the ultimate judgment of God and of history."

If I am not mistaken, the book had a price tag of about 1,200 pesos at the time of its release. Although I wanted to get hold of a copy, I ruled against shelling out the amount. I would have to work for a few days to earn the amount needed. Furthermore, there were voices saying the book was too expensive for what some reviewers labeled as "fiction." (To be fair, I would also embellish my own memoir if I would write mine.)

The publishing house is part of ABS-CBN, a multimedia giant in the country. As part of the book's promotion, the then-active TV station of the company aired Enrile's story as a two-part episode of the drama anthology "MMK." Bugoy Cariño and Enrique Gil portrayed Enrile in his years as a child and adult, respectively. (Side Trivia: Enrique Gil's movie "I am Not Big Bird" is going to open in movie theaters today.)

I forgot about the book until it came to my consciousness six years later. Let me tell you a background story. Before the work-from-home era, I used to commute from the province to my office in Quezon City. There was a policy that anyone logging in beyond 10 a.m. was considered late. One day in July 2018, it was already 10 a.m. and the UV Express van I was aboard was just approaching SM North EDSA. In instances like that one, I would alight the van and proceed to the mall. I would have early lunch and do some window shopping. I would do bulakbol first before working.

On that day, I decided to eat bulalo at the Food Court and make a pilgrimage to National Bookstore. In the latter establishment, I saw shopping carts holding copies of Enrile's memoir I was planning to buy about six years ago. I was amazed that it was on sale for only 125 pesos. Of course, I promptly bought a copy, along with Asuncion David Maramba's "Seven in the Eye of History." The book eventually disappeared from the store's bookshelves and became some sort of a collector's item. In 2021 or 2022, I saw a Facebook post of a media personality saying that she bought a second-hand copy for 3,000 pesos. 😅 For now, I have no plans to sell my copy.

Due to work-related and personal obligations, as well as the challenges of commuting, it took me another two years to finally read Enrile's memoir. (My thoughts about the book will be the subject of a future post.) As my reading intensified during the pandemic, I sought more online articles to supplement my book list. One of those articles is about him attributing his long life to a vegetable called saluyot. In an effort to boost my immunity, I also started to include this vegetable in my diet most days of the week. It can then be safely asserted that Enrile is not just a pop culture figure but also a health influencer.
Kalabasa K. The tune might also evoke memories for those who grew up watching World Wrestling Federation matches on IBC-13 during the 1980s. Randall Mario Poffo, better known by his ring name Randy "Macho Man" Savage, often used the tune as his entrance music. The following video is a slide show of Savage's entrances, with the said tune playing on the background:
The original series is the 1992 Tokyo Movie Shinsha (TMS) production My Patrasche. Two years later, ABS-CBN started airing the Tagalog-dubbed version as part of a children's programming block that also included Bananas in Pyjamas and A.T.B.P. (Awit, Titik at Bilang na Pambata).

Dog of Flanders has literary roots: It is an adaptation of A Dog of Flanders, a novel by Maria Louise Rame. Set in 19th-century Belgium, the novel is about an orphan boy named Nello, his grandfather Jehann and the titular canine Patrasche.

In the early part of the story, Patrasche was a beaten dog who was found and taken care of by Nello and Jehann. Following recovery to health, Patrasche helped Nello and Jehann in selling milk by pulling their cart into town. Moreover, the dog became Nello's best friend.

I will not discuss the story further to prevent myself from revealing some spoilers. All I can suggest is to view the series once more and relive some childhood memories associated with it. Following is a composite YouTube video featuring the opening and closing themes of the series' 1994 airing:
The unripe fruit is typically cooked with coconut milk. On the other hand, the ripe fruit is sweet with a flavor that reminds of a combination of banana and pineapple. The ripe flesh or arils can be eaten directly from the fruit or can be preserved in sugar. Moreover, the seeds from ripe fruits can be toasted like chestnuts or boiled like peanuts.
I then heard from older folks that its name is "Macarthur," leading me to assume that the commonplace palm was labeled as such in honor of the famous American general who said the famous line, "... I shall return." This ornamental palm is being planted by the Metro Manila Development Authority on large pots along its footbridges.
It turns out that Macarthur (Ptychosperma macarthurii) is originally found in isolated occurrences in the Northern Territory and Queensland in Australia, and New Guinea. The palm was introduced to the Philippines in the 1900s. It was named for Sir William Macarthur (1800-1882). He was was one of the most active and influential horticulturists in Australia in the mid-to-late 19th century.

My presumption about the plant and Douglas MacArthur have been incorrect, but there is still a connection can be made. In 1942, the general said the line "I came out of Bataan and I shall return." during a speech in Terowie, South Australia. Everyone knows that two years later, he fulfilled this promise in the shores of Palo, Leyte.
Because of these associations, I now see the Macarthur plant in a new light. It may not be related to General Douglas but it made me remind of a historical event that started the end of the Second World War and glorified victorious returns in all sorts of battlefields.Kalabasa K. One hundred and twenty seven years later, it can be noted that this problem about the supposed separation of Church and State is still one pf the most pressing issues in our country today.
Originally written in Spanish, the novel's title refers to John 20:17 in the New Testament of the Bible. When Mary Magdalene tried to touch the newly-risen Jesus, He said "Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father."
A delicacy in the Ilocos Region, chichacorn refers to corn kernels that are deep-fried in vegetable oil until crunchy. Salt and sauteed garlic are then added for flavor. The company says that Boy Bawang Chichacorn is intriguingly delicious. It adds that one can enjoy the weekend watching favorite TV show while munching into a pouch of this snack. I beg to differ since I eat this product at any time and day of the week I choose.
Ramos: The President Who Undertook the Most Number of State Visits

Former President Fidel V. Ramos, who celebrates his eighty-sixth birthday today, made 24 state visits during his six-year term from 1992 to 1998. It was the highest number of such category of foreign trips among all Philippine chief executives.

According to the official gazette of the Philippine government, the state visit is the highest form of diplomatic interaction between the Republic and foreign nations, so it demonstrates the highest form of diplomatic ceremony. It includes full arrival honors and a state luncheon or state dinner that is held in honor of the visiting head of state. The state visit is undertaken at the invitation of the host country.

In comparison, the official visit is undertaken by the head of government at the invitation of the head of a foreign government or of a foreign high-ranking government official. A state luncheon or state dinner is not required in official visits. Working visits, which concentrate on topical agendas, do not require an invitation from the host country. Working meetings are conducted and media availability may be provided.

Both programs can be seen from Monday to Friday.

The sirena or mermaid is a staple of Philippine folklore and popular culture. Similar with other cultures, the sirena is commonly portrayed as a beautiful woman with the upper body of a human and the tail of a fish. Aside from having long and flowing hair, the breasts of the sirena are typically covered by a pair of large seashells.

GMA Network seems to have gained a headway by commencing the broadcast of its Kambal Sirena exactly a week ago. Kambal Sirena features Louise delos Reyes in a dual title role. Support is provided by Aljur Abrenica, Mike Tan and Angelika dela Cruz.

Kambal Sirena is about twins named Alona and Perlas. One of them is born with gills behind her ears and the other with a mermaid's tail. (Note: Alona is presumably derived from alon, the Tagalog word for "wave"; perlas is Tagalog for "pearls). The twins' mother moved along with them to an isolated island due to worries that neighbors might be surprised by their strange features. Circumstances eventually led the twins to live separately.
On the other hand, ABS-CBN is going to present Dyesebel starting March 17. This fantasy drama series is based on a graphic novel by Mars Ravelo, whose other works have been licensed to the network. Anne Curtis will play the title role. An ensemble cast led by Gerald Anderson and Sam Milby.
The story of Dyesebel is about a young mermaid that discovers the world above the ocean and gets involved in a love triangle. It has a long history in film and television starting with a 1953 movie having Edna Luna role. Vilma Santos, Alma Moreno, Alice Dixson, and Charlene Gonzalez followed suit in playing the role of the well-known mermaid in movies in 1973, 1978, 1990 and 1996.

Interestingly, Marian Rivera played the character in the 2008 TV series of the same name on GMA Network. Anne Curtis played the role of the eponymous goddess who can transform into a mermaid, a harpy or a centaur in the 2008 ABS-CBN series Dyosa.

Other notable Philippine TV programs about mermaids include ABS-CBN's Marina starring Claudine Barretto in 2004. GMA Network matched it in the same year with Marinara starring the comedienne Rufa Mae Quinto. In 2011, ABS-CBN aired Mutya which launched child actress Mutya Orquia in the title role.

The sirena is also commonly associated with gays in Philippine popular culture. In light of Filipinos' love for spoofs and spin-offs, an enterprising producer can adapt Kambal Sirena into a series or a movie titled Kambal Siyoke. (Siyoke is a slang term for a homosexual man.).

It is off-topic but now that spoofs have been raised in the discussion, why not remake the U.S. TV series Breaking Bad into either Breaking Bading or Beking Bad (Bading and beki are other common slang terms for a homosexual man).Kalabasa K. Magellan was sailing westward looking for the Moluccas.

In the 1970s , Roman "Yoyoy" Villame immortalized this historic event through the novelty song Magellan. Villame mentioned that Magellan landed in Limasawa. In reality, Magellan took 12 more days to reach the said island.

Creative licenses might have been observed in the songwriting at the expense of historical accuracy but it's nice to know that once upon a time Filipino artists had a sense of history. Following is the music video featuring Villame. The lyrics are also provided.
On March 16, 1521
When Philippines was discovered by Magellan
They were sailing day and night across the big ocean
Until they saw a small Limasawa Island

Magellan landed in Limasawa at noon
The people met him very welcome on the shore
They did not understand the speaking they have done
Because Kastila gid at Waray-Waray man

When Magellan landed in Cebu City
Rajah Humabon met him, they were very happy
All people were baptized and built the church of Christ
And that's the beginning of our Catholic life

When Magellan visited in Mactan
To christianize them everyone
But Lapu-Lapu met him on the shore
And drive Magellan to go back home

Then Magellan got so mad
Ordered his men to camouflage
'Mactan island we could not grab
'Cause Lapu Lapu is very hard'

Then the battle began at dawn
Bolos and spears versus guns and cannons
When Magellan was hit on his neck
He stumble down and cried and cried

Oh, mother mother I am sick
Call the doctor very quick
Doctor, doctor shall I die?
Tell my mama do not cry
Tell my mama do not cry
Tell my mama do not cry

That's the end of Magellan
In the island of Mactan long time ago
Many fans liked Yan because of what they say his boy-next-door looks. Yan's advocacy of education also added to his popularity. He was one of the few film and television actors who earned a college degree first before entering show business.
Yan's career was at its peak when cut short by his death from acute pancreatitis on Good Friday of 2002 at the young age of 27. Close to 10,000 people attended Yan's funeral attesting to the extent of how much fans adored him. Who knows? If not for this tragedy, he might be still thriving in the entertainment industry. His first three movies, all released by Star Cinema in 1996, are remembered here.

Rico Yan was introduced in the Radio Romance, Star Cinema's Valentine offering for 1996. At that time "Radio Romance" was also the branding of DWRR-FM, the Manila radio station of ABS-CBN. The movie was directed by Jose Javier Reyes while the theme song was performed by Jose Mari Chan. Other members of the cast include Sharmaine Arnaiz, John Estrada, Robin Da Roza, Paolo Abrera and Gelli De Belen.

Incidentally, Radio Romance was also the first movie that featured the love team that pairs him with Claudine Barretto. (Yan's last movie, Got 2 Believe, was also the final movie of his screen tandem with Barretto.)
"Good Morning" is not only a phrase you say to other people at the start of the day. In Filipinos' daily lives, "Good Morning" also refers to a brand of towel that can be used in any type of activity imaginable by people from all walks of life. Suprisingly, this towel is not locally-made; it came from China.

The typical Good Morning towel is made from cotton, rectangular in shape and measures about twelve centimeters by sixty centimeters. There are thin blue stripes on the long sides. The ends feature the words "Good Morning," a logo having the number "98" (this number varies) underneath it and a set of Chinese characters. I do not know the meaning of this characters, but presumably it is "Good Morning" in Chinese.

As long as I can remember, Good Morning towel is part of my daily routine. Laborers also use the Good Morning towel to wipe off their sweat during a day's hard work. Some tie it around their heads, so the towel can be considered as a a badge of proletarian pride. Even in movies, policemen in action can be commonly seen that way. The Good Morning towel can also be used in the kitchen if napkins are not available.

The towel reminds us of a long tradition of Filipino-Chinese cultural ties, a link that dates to centuries before our country got its name. It could be wishful thinking, but who knows, this humble towel can be a diplomatic catalyst. In light of the territorial dispute involving the West Philippine Sea (or South China Sea), citizens from the neighboring countries should work for peace, peace that is as white as a this towel. It would be the a worry-free time the Filipino and Chinese people will happily say "Good morning" to each other.Kalabasa K. Formerly called La Sonrisa (Spanish, "The Smile"), Dimasalang is originally written by Don Honorio Lopez. It contains forecasts based on the Western zodiac and folk religion. Aside from featuring dates of high tides and low tides, Dimasalang also provides dates of festivals related to fishing and farming.

The book, however, does not provide information on when it was renamed from La Sonrisa to Dimasalang. It might have been a tribute to emergent national Jose Rizal, who used that word as a pseudonym. The image of Rizal image also appears in the book's cover. It is surrounded by the images of Jose Burgos, Graciano Lopez Jaena, Marcelo H. Del Pilar, Apolinario Mabini and Andres Bonifacio. The diphthong "ng" in Dimasalang is written as "g" with a tilde above it. Considering that the book was written during the Spanish period, Spanish-language speakers nasalized the "g" instead of pronouncing "ng."

You may ask who Honorio Lopez was. According to the almanac's title page, Lopez was a "Technical Assistant" to the Philippine President. He was the commanding general of the Legion de Veteranos de la Revolucion from 1896 to 1899 and a colonel of the Philippine Army during the War for Independence in 1899.
