 A few weeks ago, we posted an article about the television soundtrack Mga Awiting Batibot.

The following will be part of a series of companion articles, each individually focusing on particular tracks in the album.

NOTES:

When there was still no social media, making toy boats out of folded paper was a favorite pastime for multitudes of children. 

Children nowadays seem to be too rely too much on electronic devices for recreation. The song Bangkang Papel is a reminder that enjoyment can be achieved by taking notice of the things around us and being resourceful.

Speaking of wind, the song Umihip Tulad ng Hangin prompted me to plan on making paper windmills when I visit the farmland in the province.

NOTES:

In 1939, the Abakada alphabet was adopted for the Tagalog-based Wikang Pambansa (now Filipino).

When enumerating each consonant in the "indigenized" Latin alphabet, it is always pronounced with an ⟨-a⟩ suffix. For instance, "ba", "ka", etc. This approach is also the foundation for the nomenclature of the Abakada alphabet.

In 1987, the Abakada alphabet has since been superseded by the adoption of the Filipino alphabet. The Filipino alphabet has additional eight letters and repositioned letter K.

Robert Grace Hit "A Dream" in TVJ's Shoot That Ball

In the 1980s, one of the foreign songs that became popular in the Philippines is A Dream (Dumio) by Robert Grace. Played constantly by the leading radio stations of that era, the song was a hit among the regular attendees of the occasional Saturday night disco parties in many barangays all over the country. There is little information on the Internet about this dance hit. Fortunately a YouTube channel called RAGElite offers some details. According to the channel, A Dream (Dumio) was an underground hit in Melbourne, Australia circa 1986-1987. In those years, Grace was possibly the only Australian representative of the Italo-disco movement.

A Dream (Dumio) was so well-liked all over the Philippines that the comedic trio of Tito, Vic and Joey parodied the Robert Grace hit in Shoot That Ball, a movie produced by Regal Films in 1987. During those times, it seemed to be common practice in the local movie industry to imitate or cover chart-topping tracks from abroad with exaggerated humor. Intellectual property law was less strictly enforced than nowadays.

Going back to the scene, the parody of A Dream (Dumio) can be viewed from the 46:00 to 50:00 minute window of the video below. In that scene, Pidiong, Manong and Tinggoy (respectively portrayed by Tito, Vic and Joey are students at the Agricultural School of the Orient (ASO). ASO is the rival institution of the Philippine University of Sciences & Arts (PUSA). This rivalry and other details, will be covered in future posts on this blog. 

Mrs. Mercedes Kasusuan (portrayed by Florence Carvajal) is their teacher in Animal Husbandry. Her students cannot afford to buy the Hong Kong goods she sells in the classroom. In order for the trio to pass her class, Mrs. Kasusuan tasked them to fill a pail with cow's milk in 10 minutes The song-and-dance sequence ensues.

Lito Lapid as Leon Guerrero

On the July 23, 2012 episode of the ABS-CBN TV series Lorenzo's Time, the lead character Enzo idolizes the actor Lito Lapid so much he was given a VHS copy of the movie Ang Pagbabalik ni Leon Guerrero for home viewing.

Enzo then attempted to visit his idol at his office in the Senate. (Note: Lito Lapid was re-elected to the Senate of the Philippines in 2010 for another six-year term. Enzo met Jinggoy Estrada instead).

The scene made me smile because I just watched the film a few days before.

Now, who is Leon Guerrero?  The words 'Ang pagbabalik' means 'The return' in English, and this search for knowledge led me to the Video 48 blog.  I found out that the character was the Filipino version of The Lone Ranger, initially appearing in the 1968 movie Leon Guerrero: Laban sa 7 Kilabot.  It starred Jess Lapid, Sr., who incidentally was the uncle of Lito Lapid.

In Ang Pagbabalik ni Leon Guerrero, Lito Lapid plays the dual role of Manuel and Leon.  Manuel is a meek-mannered man who hails from the town of Santa Fe.  The children tease him for his cowardice, while his father always beat him.  Manuel eventually assumed the identity of Leon Guerrero to protect the townspeople from bandits.  Following are some scenes from the Lotus Films production:
